Student loans are very rarely dischargeable in bankruptcy. Some people have taken advantage of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. This program promises to cancel any remaining student loan debt for those who work for the government or nonprofit agencies if they have been making on-time payments for 10 years. Many teachers and law enforcement officers fit the qualifications. This October marks the 10th year of the program, so it will be the first time anyone will have made enough payments to get their student loan debt forgiven. But now CNN and the Washington Post report that the U.S. DOE is going to propose ending the program. It’s unclear whether the Trump administration will propose ending the program for future graduates, or end it for those who’ve already applied and have been making their payments. The DOE won’t say.
